Thank you for visiting my website. My name is Nelson Thomas and I play folk/bluegrass/old-time country and singer-songwriter music. I have performed in some fashion in North Georgia/Western North Carolina/Eastern Tennessee since 1974. My main instruments have been the acoustic guitar and bluegrass banjo.
I have been around music pretty much all my life and have been drawn to play and perform as long as I can remember. My parents tell me that I would play a plastic instrument and make up songs for them and visitors when I was very small. I don't remember him doing so, but my Grandpa Thomas taught shape note singing around the area. All of my dad's brothers and sisters played music and I would hear them when the family would get together. My mother's dad played banjo when he was younger, which I learned more about after I started playing. And my mother and her sisters used to sing as a family group. So, in many ways it is not so much that I decided that I wanted to play music, but music decided I should become a picker.
As I said, my main instruments have been acoustic guitar (rhythm, flatpick, and fingerstyle) and bluegrass banjo (my main influence was Earl Scruggs). At times, I have also performed on old time banjo, washboard, harmonica, mandolin, fiddle, and electric guitar, as well as sometimes playing a doghouse bass.
